VUWER (pronounced like viewer ) is an Applescript application designed to remotely track your MacBook or MacBook Pro (or any other Apple computer) in the event that it is lost or stolen. VUWER is not foolproof, but it is reasonably secure, easy to implement, and costs nothing but a little time and effort to set up. ...

In iTunes 10, Apple has removed the filter/search field from the Sync Apps window for an attached device. The text field allowed you to search for a string and filter your list of apps like in Spotlight. It's not really missing; it has just been replaced.
Just like in any iTunes window -- whether browsing the App Store, Music Store, etc. -- the universal Search field in the upper right can now be used to filter/search through your own apps in the Sync Apps list.

One of the most interesting problems (to me at least) in browser layout engines is how to implement a style system that can determine the style information for elements on a page efficiently. I worked on this extensively in the Gecko layout engine during my time at AOL and I've also done a lot of work on it for WebCore at Apple. My ideal implementation would actually be a hybrid of the two systems, since some of the optimizations I've done exist only in one engine or the other. ...

For many months now, I have been captivated by the mystery and lore of the soon to be released Nintendo Wii -- Nintendo's latest gaming system, which is to be launched this Sunday, November 19th. As should be obvious by my involvement with this site, I am also a long time Mac fanatic, having founded a Mac User Group when I was in colleage and otherwise having been a believer in the Jobsian fantasy since the early 1990s. Other than my recent fascination with the Nintendo Wii, I have not ever been an avid video game player, other than a rather common fascination with arcade systems and some of the earlier Nintendo iterations when I was of the "typical" gaming age (i.e., 12 to 17 or so). So I recently wondered why it is I am craving a Nintendo Wii like I have only before craved the latest hot product from Apple. In this article I attempt to analyze this question and explore whether there is a nexus between Mac users and Wii fanatics that might be larger than anyone might think. ...

It has been exciting and at times challenging one and a half years for us to develop our new mobile Web browser for the S60 software platform based on Apples and KDEs fantastic Safari and Konqueror browser code. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank the KDE community, WebKit community and the Apple Safari team for having built what is today WebCore and JavaScriptCore, a large part of your code is today already running in our Nokia mobile phones. We at Nokia are looking forward to working together with many of you from the community and partner companies in the near future to further develop the S60 WebKit. ...

Apple's foray into social music is not going well as its Ping service is experiencing a multitude of problems, including comment spam, a lack of promised functionality, and generally inconsistent user experience.Security researcher Chet Wisniewski at Sophos said Apple is not employing any type of spam or URL filtering, as comments such as those advertising "free iPhones" were already appearing some 24 hours after the site's launch. He also said that Apple has made it easy for those to abuse the service."No credit card or other positive identification is required to participate," he pointed out in a blog post. Without this, a user could create accounts easily simply by creating a bogus iTunes account which in turn would allow a bogus Ping account to be created.Ping is also suffering from a case of overpromising and underdelivering, apparently. There's an app for that, and you're the folks who are creating it. But should you design a web-based application, or an iPhone app? Each approach has pluses and minusesnot to mention legions of religiously rabid supporters. Apple promotes both approaches (they even gave the web a year-long head start before beginning to sell apps in the store), and the iPhone's Safari browser supports HTML5 and CSS3 and brags a fast JavaScript engine. Yet many companies and individuals with deep web expertise choose to create iPhone apps instead of web apps that can do the same thing. Explore both approaches and learn just about everything you'll need to know if you choose to create an iPhone app—from the lingo, to the development process, to the tricks that can smooth the path of doing business with Apple. ...
