- CyberInsecure.com: Half-Million Sites Mostly Running PHPBB Forum Software Hacked In Latest Attack According to the CyberInsecure.com website around a half-million websites running PHPBB were hacked in a large coordinated effort. More than half a million websites have been compromised in a new round of attacks that hacked domains in order to infect unsuspecting users' PCs with a variety of trojans. This ongoing campaign includes new malware hosting domains and new trojans variations. All of the sites are running older or misconfigured versions of "phpBB," an open-source message forum manager. Open-source popular applications like phpBB tend to be often targeted by mass scanning and exploiting tools. The hack redirected visitors through several steps ultimately ending up on a page that tried to take advantage of errors in older Internet Explorer and RealPlayer versions. The article talks about exactly which viruses could have caused the problems and the wide range of sites (both in topic and location) that were effected. The best way to protect you and your PHPBB install from something like this happening is to get the latest version of the software and learn how to configure it correctly.
- Rich Zygler's Blog: PHP Developer Jobs are the Hottest EVER!!! Rich Zygler has blogged about a trend he's been seeing that will make just about every PHP developer's eyes light up - the market for qualified PHP programmers has taken off dramatically. While there are lots of PHP jobs in the usual suspects like small start-ups, there also seem to be a number of jobs at established companies and developer shops. I'm also seeing a definite split in PHP jobs where there are both entry level jobs as well as jobs for more experienced people with titles like "Senior PHP Developer" and "PHP Tech Lead." He notes that the requirements for the jobs are just as diverse as the companies looking for candidates. Some want framework developers (like with the Zend Framework or Symfony) and some are looking for the "jack of all trades" sort of PHP developer that is flexible and experienced. If you happen to be looking for a job, you can also check out our jobs section to find recently added positions.
- Ken Guest's Blog: Review "Mastering phpMyAdmin 2.11 for Effective MySQL Management" by Marc Delisle Ken Guest has posted a new book review of Packt Publishing's "Mastering phpMyAdmin 2.11 for Effective MySQL Management": This book on phpMyAdmin is written by Marc Delisle, one of the core developers of the application which I think just about any software developer utilising MySQL has dabbled with at the least. I can honestly say that anyone that experimented with phpMyAdmin before reading this book will use it much more thoroughly and more productively afterwards. He includes an overall opinion of the book as well as a specific chapter - the one covering MySQL 5 additions - and his total enjoyment with the contents of the book.
- SitePoint PHP Blog: Useful in-browser development tools for PHP This new post from Troels Knak-Nielsen on the SitePoint PHP blog shares a few helpful in-browser development tools that could come in handy in your day to day coding. While debuggers exists, there isn't much of a tradition for using them in PHP. People have largely come to rely on injecting debugging code directly into the program, for inspecting program scope. Tools mentioned include traceers and error handlers (like XDebug), some debugging parts of the popular PHP frameworks and the set of *cachegrind tools to help you parse the output of XDebug for profiling your application.

- Etienne Kneuss' Blog: SPL Datastructures updated Etienne Kneuss has posted about some updates to the data structures functionality in the Standard PHP Library (SPL), specifically some new additions. There finally is documentation for SplDoublyLinkedList, SplStack and SplQueue and some "new" classes: SplHeap (abstract), SplMaxHeap, SplMinHeap and SplPriorityQueue, documentation of those classes is in progress. An example of the new functionality (for SplPriorityQueue) is included in the post showing the insertion of a value into a pre-existing array (without having to slice or splice!).
- Christopher Jones' Blog: PECL OCI8 1.2.5 Available Christopher Jones has a (very) quick post today about the release of the latest version of the PECL OCI drivers - 1.2.5. Hang on, weren't we up to OCI8 version 1.3? Well, yes, but that's Beta bordering on Production. In the meantime, I wanted to make the OCI8 bug fixes from PHP 5.2.6 available in a "Production" release and keep PECL OCI8 1.2 in sync with PHP 5.2. The changelog is here. Updates include bug fixes for cursor leaking, a LOB leak, a problem with collection creation and an update to the compile option for the Instant Client to look for RPMs.
- Zend Developer Zone: Synchronizing Drupal Modules with Adobe AIR On the Zend Developer Zone, there's a new article/tutorial showing how to keep things in sync on your Drupal installation with the help of Adobe AIR. Whether you're an enterprise developer working in a large shop or setting up a blog for yourself, you've almost certainly been tasked with keeping your development code in sync with some type of stable release. Whether a project is big or small, you still need to ensure that the core code you work with remains consistent. The tutorial walks you through the setup of a basic AIR application, how to pull the configuration XML into it and parsing it to use in the interface. The next step is the sync, grabbing your config and pushing it out to other multiple configs across your sites (via a REST service).
