- Hubble: When it comes to galaxies, diversity is everywhere [heic0819] A group of galaxies in our cosmic backyard has given astronomers clues about how stars form. A thorough survey using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has observed around 14 million stars in 69 galaxies. Some galaxies were found to be full of ancient stars, while others are like sun-making factories.
- Venus Express: A three-dimensional view of variable winds in the cloud layers on Venus A detailed, three-dimensional view of the wind speeds and directions in the cloud layers of Venus has been obtained with the VIRTIS instrument on Venus Express. This study, which benefited from an extensive and homogeneous data set, contributes to a better understanding of the temporal and spatial behaviour of the winds on Venus.
- Venus Express: First Venus Express public data release Data from the VMC, SPICAV-SOIR, VIRTIS and MAG instruments on Venus Express have been delivered to the ESA Planetary System Archive and are now freely available to interested users. These data have been the basis for some of the first scientific highlights from the Venus Express mission.
- XMM-Newton: XMM-Newton detection of QPO in RE J1034+396 important for theoretical understanding of AGN The first detection of strong, quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) in the X-ray emission of an active galaxy (RE J1034+396) has been reported by a team of scientists from the University of Durham. Their result, obtained using data collected with XMM-Newton, appears in this week's issue of Nature.
- Conferences: ESLAB 42: Cosmic Cataclysms and Life A number of cataclysms have occurred in the history of the universe and the Solar System. The Symposium will review those that had a critical influence on the evolution of habitable worlds and on the emergence and survival of life on Earth, and possibly elsewhere.
- XMM-Newton: XMM-Newton Announcement of Opportunity (AO8) Proposals are solicited for observations with XMM-Newton in response to the Eighth Announcement of Opportunity, AO-8, issued today. This AO covers the period May 2009 to April 2010 and is open to all proposers. The deadline for receipt of proposals is 12:00 UT on 10 October 2008.
- Astrophysics: Suzaku 4th Announcement of Opportunity Dear Colleague, I am pleased to invite you to respond to the "Announcement of Opportunity" to submit proposals for observations to be performed with Suzaku.
- COROT: International Young Astronomers School on CoRoT Astrophysics One decade after the discovery of the first giant exoplanet we are entering a new era with the recent launch of CoRoT in December 2006. This spacecraft provides ultra-high precision space-based photometric monitoring. The objective of the school is to introduce the students to the fields of stellar evolution and exoplanet science. The school also covers the techniques of asteroseismology, planetary transit detection, and more generally space-based ultra-high precision photometric monitoring.
- Conferences: Classification and Discovery in Large Astronomical Surveys Numerous current or upcoming astronomical surveys produce large amounts of photometric, spectroscopic and/or astrometric data. Object classification, parameter determination, novelty detection and the discovery of structure are important yet challenging tasks. This workshop will bring together scientists from a variety of fields in order to discuss the issues, identify common problems and solutions and to share ideas.
- Conferences: Eighth European Mars Conference (EMC8) This two-day conference focusses on the human exploration of Mars, addressing the difficulties of physiological and psychological nature that are still to be overcome, and looking at how these are being tackled.
