  • CUPS-PDF is broken in Snow Leopard Ive noticed, and received many reports, that CUPS-PDF is broken in Snow Leopard. Ive been toying with it and its not a quick fix, it looks like. I updated to v2.5 from the site and tried that one, but the new CUPS 1.4 in Snow Leopard wont recognize it. So, Ill keep trying and once I figure it out Ill post a new version. No need to keep emailing me. :)
  • Notae 3 Direction Im pondering different things to do with Notae 3 (yes, its still happening). The data store is moving to a single store per user rather than the documents aspect it has now (though it will import old documents into the new store, and you will be able to switch stores and keep it wherever you like (within reason)). Because of this, the ability to keep things in different notebooks will go away, which Im not sure I like. So an idea to keep it was to have distinct objects called Notebooks that notes could be associated with, like folders. Initial work with these didnt work out so well because there was either the need to have an All Notes item in the source area (new) or force the use of a notebook, which seems a bit oppressive. Another idea Ive thought of was to use a special tag of the style notebook:Notebook Name that would represent the notebooks and then the sidebar would replace the tags browser in that you get a list of tags (including notebooks) and then once you click on one, the other tags are hidden to only show tags that intersect the current tag (like the browser does). I kind of like this idea, but Im unsure then what the functional difference between a notebook tag and a regular tag would be in the UI? I could do icons or other things but that would just seem to be confusing. I might just use the notebook syntax for imports only and then let users use tags as they wish after that, unless theres some pressing need to have real, distinct notebooks. Either way, whatever the current tag selection/filter is on the source list, when new notes are created Im of the opinion that they should then inherit the currently-selected tags automatically so that you get a workspace, so to speak. I can pick the tags Work, Notae, and v3 and then any new notes will be in that context. When I pick some other context, those notes get hidden, and so on. Itd be great. :) If any users have feedback, Id love to hear it.
  • Plans for Notae 3 Ive been thinking of the direction I want to take Notae recently (after fixing that damned speed problem with Leopard that Apple seems to want to ignore). I want to do the following things: .Mac Sync of notes and tags. Cleaner tags. Right now, while it works, it feels a little off when you use the tag palette to find things. It could be exchanged with another GUI element that makes it easier to manage tags as well as organize by them. Easier multiple-note editing. Since you can have several documents open and then open several note windows on top of that, it can get a little cluttered. Perhaps tabs? Perhaps more. GUI cleanup. Ive added a lot since Notae 1.0 but havent changed the UI much. I like the reductionist aspect of it (and so do many of you, it seems) so Ill keep that, but the menus are getting a little large. I need to see what features should be maintained and which should be pushed aside (removed or moved to a non-prime location). To that end, Im seeing that the easiest way of handling this is to move to a one-database-per-user approach like many other programs. This solves a problem with .Mac Sync (which document to sync? And which document receives synced notes?) as well as the window clutter problem (one window with either tabs or child windows). Obviously, it would import Notae 1 and 2 documents into the main database if I went this route. So, does anyone use the multiple document aspect of Notae? Does anyone save their documents on removable drives or similar? How about email them around? Im thinking that I could make the one database with top-level folders for organization rather than the documents concept to cover that concept and then let people pick where to keep the main database (a la iPhoto). PS: Also, who is using Notae in Tiger still? Im pondering moving to Leopard-only for Notae 3 to clean some things up in the program and want to know what would come of that.
  • Notae Slowness in Leopard Unfortunately, Spotlight in Leopard has a bug. A pretty bad one. As the notes change, Spotlight feels the need to hit the Spotlight index file 22-27 times for no reason, and only for some people. Two out of my three machines are affected. Ive been told theres nothing I can change and that I should wait on an update to the OS to resolve the issue. This sucks, generally, but looking at how the issue presents, I cant see a clear way around it (as notes change, I load a new NIB the act of reading the NIB causes Spotlight to go haywire). Ill post a note here when I have more information on it. If you either have access to read it, or want to vote for it, its bug 5591746.
  • Day Job The products at CP may see a little longer of a delay than Id like, with refreshes possibly in the February timeframe. That saddens me, but theres no way around it, my day job is taking up far too much of my time. However, that doesnt mean you have to go without quality Mac software. :) Im a co-founder of Barton Springs Software and we just released a beta version of our first major product, Prosperity. Its a desktop personal finance program written exclusively for the Mac and includes the ability to connect to banks that offer OFX servers and download your transactions from them. It, of course, also allows for file imports from QIF and OFX as well as manual entry. Feel free to get in on the beta by going to the site and signing up for the mailing list. Youll get instructions from there.
  • Leopard Compatability I was on vacation for the release of Leo, so Im a little late for the final compatibility scorecard. As far as I can tell: Notae runs fine in Leopard. Ill do some more testing to make absolutely sure every feature works well, but Ive been checking all along and nothings obviously broken. My CUPS-PDF distribution does not work in Leopard. Im sure its something simple and Ill look into it soon. Text Reader and Launchd Editor have not been tested in Leo, but I expect no problems as these are very simple programs. Ill look into this more this week and see if anything needs to be done.
  • Vacation Ill be on vacation until November 5th. Contact of any kind will be delayed until I return. Comments on the support site and this site will be disabled in the mean time as I will not be here to monitor for spam, etc. Ill try and clear out the inbox before I go, though&
  • Notae 2.2.1 Released Fixes Comments for new notes are now empty. Tag browser resets when a new note is made. The demo period now resets for unregistered users of older versions.
  • Notae Translations The reason that Notae 2.1 removed the translations is that I really needed to add some UI elements and get an update out but couldnt really wait on the translations for all the translations Id added so far. Now that I really look at the user base for Notae (the sites that give it news and the IPs downloading it), French- and German-speaking countries are growing in number very quickly. For future versions of Notae, Id like to limit the translations to just three: English, French, and German. I think that about covers everyone. Im going to push out a 2.2.1 later today with some small fixes, but for 2.2.2 Id like to go to this model. Any French or German speakers care to translate the remaining strings? Most of them have been done already, I believe. Theres just a dozen or so missing.
  • Notae 2.2 Notae 2.2 has been released has been released with the following enhancements. Features Notes can be set as templates and inserted into other notes via a contextual menu. Added the ability to automatically save a document when closed. The search field can now match partial tag names in both All and Tag modes. Contextual menus on table and text area for actions such as duplicate and export as well as the setting of many note attributes, including locked status, adding and removing tags, and template status. Added a preference for displaying the open document selector when no documents are open. Fixes Copy Note as HTML is more reliable. Spotlight index is now more comprehensive and reliable. Documents will be reindexed when opened and the new index written out when the document is saved again. Resolved potential crash when fetching web pages. Focus now goes to the text area when switching notes. Note header now reliably disables its fields when appropriate. Escape properly ends editing of items in the table view now. Info palette now properly saves changes if it is closed without moving out of the field being edited. Tags can be dragged from the tags palette to the note headers tag field now. Table properly rejects files that are not importable. Need help with this release? Use the new support site.
