  • New Type York New Type York is a website dedicated to the use of typography in New York City. The site itself has a nice, clean design, making it easy to browse the photos of signage around the city. Featured type includes vintage neon signs, hand-lettered grocery store specials, and the often talked about subway lettering. The photoblog is curated by James Patrick Gibson, a designer based in New York City. You can keep up with the latest posts via Twitter. I talked to James, and he told me future plans for the site include a redesign, user submissions, faster performance, and possibly geo-tagging the photos so we know exactly where the signs are in the big city. • 20 Years of Photoshop To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Photoshop, Adobe has created a new website dedicated to the software. A nice timeline atop the page takes you through Photoshop's history, from Thomas and John Knoll's development of "Display" (that would later become the industry standard image editing software Photoshop) to CS4 and mobile apps. Digging deeper into the site, there's a reunion video, and of course an opportunity to download trial versions and read about new Photoshop features.20 Years of Photoshop originally appeared on About.com Graphic Design on Sunday, March 7th, 2010 at 10:21:12.Permalink | Comment | Email this
  • Olympic Inspired Design As we come to the end of the winter games, I thought I'd share a beautiful gallery of design I came across through Twitter. The Olympic inspired images range from the cover of Billboard magazine to concept work by artists. I was especially impressed by the print by Jamie Blakesley and the retro posters by Chris Page. Have a look at the gallery on DesignrFix and please share any of your own favorite Olympic or sports design in the comments.Olympic Inspired Design originally appeared on About.com Graphic Design on Sunday, February 28th, 2010 at 18:45:06.Permalink | Comment | Email this
  • Add Yourself or Your Design Firm to About Graphic Design After a great response to the opportunity to share your logo designs on the site, I've added a new community-generated directory of graphic designers. This directory will be a great way to share your work with other readers, as well as for others to search for freelancers and design firms. I've also seen some of the logo submissions already showing up in Google results, a nice bonus for sharing your designs. Add yourself or your design firm to the directory and enjoy browsing the work of others as they come in. Thank you for your submissions!Add Yourself or Your Design Firm to About Graphic Design originally appeared on About.com Graphic Design on Monday, February 22nd, 2010 at 22:57:28.Permalink | Comment | Email this
  • Share Your Logos on About.com Design firms, agencies and freelancers are often creating logos and identities for their clients. They also have to create their own brands, which can be a complicated and rewarding process. Fill out our simple form to share your company's logo design and some thoughts behind it. There are already some great entries up, and I'd love to see more. • Designing the Olympics The Olympics is the ultimate branding opportunity... logos, individual event graphics, medals, uniforms, signage and countless other graphics centered around the international sporting event. Fast Company has a nice gallery of Olympic design, that features some of the Vancouver 2010 identity. Looking back in time, I found a great post from MB Web Design on Olympic logos from 1896 (when there weren't official logos but some beautiful posters) up to designs from candidate cities for 2016. Check out this history of Olympic logos and let me know your favorites in the comments.Designing the Olympics originally appeared on About.com Graphic Design on Sunday, February 14th, 2010 at 00:52:38.Permalink | Comment | Email this
  • MTV's New Logo: No More Music Television The MTV logo is not only one of the most recognizable designs in our culture, but also one of the most flexible. Whether rendered in the classic yellow and red, pinstriped or leopard print, the logo is always identifiable. This has given the TV giant the ability to keep their brand while using the 3-D "M" with the spray painted "TV" in countless ways. The story of this famous logo project from almost 30 years ago can be read on Frank Olinsky's website, one of the original designers. For these reasons, I was surprised to first hear that MTV had redesigned the logo, until I saw they basically just cropped out the bottom text "Music Television." This change makes perfect sense, being that MTV isn't what it used to be. It's now the place for reality TV and "Cribs," not 24/7 music videos. Despite the change, the logo will still be just as flexible, able to accommodate unlimited graphics and photos as seen on this blog. What do you think of the change? • Managing the Web Design Process with Notable There are many project management systems out there, but Notable has found a niche by creating a great web-based application that focuses on design feedback. Geared towards web design, but certainly useful for all kinds of work, Notable allows you to take a snapshot of a website that includes the design, code and content. From there, multiple users can leave notes and feedback on specific elements of the page and discuss the design until reaching a final product. Read the full review.Managing the Web Design Process with Notable originally appeared on About.com Graphic Design on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 at 10:02:03.Permalink | Comment | Email this
  • Featured Website: Grammy.com With the Grammy's wrapping up a couple of hours ago, it may seem like an obvious website to feature. However, it's not the just the show, but also the design of the Grammy site that caught my attention. Overall, the site has a very modern feel, with subtle background imagery and semi-transparent blocks of content used throughout the design. A clean rotating feature area, video highlights, and social networking links are highlighted, followed by a list of nicely styled blog posts. Gold type is used for headings keep that Grammy style, and features such a tag clouds give the site a current feel. Check out Grammy.com to see the design, and the winners, and be sure to visit about.com's entertainment channel for more coverage. • The Internet in Numbers Pingdom has compiled a very interesting collection of Internet statistics from 2009. From the number of emails sent in a day (247 billion) to Internet users worldwide (1.7 billion) the blog post has a long list of stats in categories including social media and online video. While a lot of the numbers are estimates and pulled from sources all around the web, it's still an interesting read and a nice summary of the year online.
