Jimmy and Melissa Motz pulled into a parking spot in front of their apartment in Rock Hill, S.C., after celebrating Valentine's Day together at a strip club in Charlotte, N.C., in 2001. After midnight, neighbors said a burst of gunfire sounded, and when they arrived at the scene, they saw that Melissa Motz had been shot. "20/20" filed an open records request and recently gained access to the evidence and police records related to Melissa Huntley Motz's death. At the time of her death, Jimmy Motz was not prosecuted, but Melissa's parents later sued their son-in-law for wrongful death. After a trial in 2007, a jury found Motz had caused Melissa's death and awarded the Huntleys $25,000 in damages. Nine years later, the new county coroner is actively reinvestigating the case.
