Second British iPhone ad banned from TV
A second TV ad for the iPhone has been banned from British TV, the region's Advertising Standards Authority has announced. The ASA says it received 17 complaints about the ad, which depicts a person switching from the Times Online website to Google Maps, and finally the phone's Mail client. The problem with the ad is said to be the speed depicted for the phone's 3G connection, which the ad claim...

Group minimized windows in Witch
The latest version of Witch, the indispensable window-switching utility, contains a new feature that highlights minimized windows with a border color of your choosing. When you activate Witch, you'll then be able to easily see your minimized windows, as their icons will have a unique border color. (Disclaimer: I was one of at least one users who asked for this feature, as I would occasionally activate a minimized window, and wanted some way to easily see them at a glance.) As shipped, the minimized windows are shown in the normal window hierarchy. What I wanted, though, was a way to sort of mirror the Dock's view of minimized windows -- I wanted to see all of my minimized windows grouped together. Thanks to a hidden Witch preference, you can do just that. First, disable Witch and close its System Preferences panel, then open Terminal and paste this command: ...

Why Developers Are Switching To Macs
snydeq writes "Programmers are finding themselves increasingly drawn to the Mac as a development platform, in large part due to Apple's decision to move to Intel chips and to embrace virtualization of other OSes, which has turned Mac OS X into a flexible tool for development, InfoWorld reports. The explosion of interest in smartphone development is helping the trend, with iPhone development lock-in to the Mac environment the chief motivating factor for Apple as a platform of choice for mobile development. Yet for many, the Mac remains sluggish and poorly tuned for development, with developers citing its virtual memory system's poor performance in paging data in and out of memory and likening use of the default-network file system, AFS, to engaging oneself with 'some kind of passive-aggressive torture.' What remains unclear is whether Apple will lend an ear to this new wave of Mac-based development or continue to develop products that lock out uses programmers expect."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

One way to see a frozen window's contents
Sometimes after switching from one application to another, and then trying to return to the first, I'll find that it won't come forward -- because the first application is doing a long calculation, or something else that makes it freeze. I want to see the current window state for the frozen application, but I can't do it until the program has finished doing whatever it's doing. For those times when I just can't wait, I think I found the solution: Exposé. Just press F9 (or whatever key you've assigned to All Windows), or move your mouse to the All Windows screen corner, if you've set that up. Then just click on the frozen window, and it should come to the foreground (though it won't update until the long calculation is done).

Quickly zoom photos in iPhoto's browse mode
When viewing photos in the grid layout of iPhoto '08 running on Leopard, simply press the spacebar to zoom the selected image to full size of image browsing part of the window. Press the Space Bar again to return to the grid view, or use the Left and Right Arrow keys to scroll through your images.Of course, this seems intuitive if you use QuickLook in the Finder a lot or use the this hint for a similar effect in the Media Browser, but it's not documented anywhere so I hadn't tried it.It's a huge help to use this function to quickly look more closely at a few images while still taking advantage of the normal grid view to quickly browser through the rest of the image library. No more switching to full-screen mode or zooming in and out just to examine a few images.[robg adds: I don't think this is exclusive to iPhoto '08 or Leopard; I recall it working in older versions of iPhoto...

Witch 2 - Switch to any open window
Developer: ManyTricks / Product Page Price: ?9.95 [$12.35 as of 10/28/08] SharewareThis week's Pick of the Week is actually a rerun. Back in 2005, Witch was very new, and very welcomed -- it was the first program I'd found that let me switch windows, instead of just switching between applications. Over the years, I've come to rely on Witch quite heavily. Unfortunately, the release of 10.5 caused some issues for Witch -- nothing critical, but (for instance) some annoying repetitive log entries.Witch 2.0 (now up to 2.0.1) fixed those problems, and added one nifty new feature -- you can use (and display, if you wish) "shortcut" badge icons on your first 10 open windows. So I can switch to any window by pressing Op...
