Apple TV's Unrealized Potential
Apple has been particularly aggressive in setting standards and showing leadership with the iPhone and new MacBooks. They've removed FireWire from the MacBook, to many people's alarm, moved to DisplayPort video technology, and, on the iPhone side, completely disrupted an industry that was asleep at the wheel. And yet when it comes to the digital living room, Apple has shown very little leadership.

10.5: Safer sleep during networked Time Machine backups
The problem: You have Time Machine set up using a sparsebundle on a network drive, such as a Time Capsule or an AirPort Extreme-connected hard drive. Most of the time, everything works great. Consider this reproducible scenario, however:You are working away at home and a hourly backup starts. Time machine automagically mounts the sparsebundle. You need to leave and put your laptop to sleep, not paying attention to the fact that time machine is working. You move your laptop to work/school and wake it up.The sparsebundle is still mounted, but obviously does not work. Finder and Spotlight grow increasing stuck until you have to reboot your machine. It occurs to you that the image back home was not closed properly and that eventually, this will corrupt your backups!Solution:Install SleepWatcher (I ...

Sleep soundly with GeekTool via SleepWatcher
I'm sure everyone knows about GeekTool and how amazing it is. However, getting my computer to fall asleep with this application running is somewhat challenging -- because it is running shell commands every 15 seconds, OS X has a hard time believing that the machine isn't idle. As a result, the computer develops a case of insomnia. I have gone to great lengths to try and get my sleep working how I wanted it. Then, a friend walks by and asks what I was doing. I explained my problem, and he came up with a brilliant solution: just turn off GeekTool. Sometimes, the simplest solution works best. This solution uses the ever-so-useful ...
