Prevent SkyMACMate software from filling console.log
It is a pretty well known bug that those who use SkyMACMate to allow Skype to connect to regular phones have their hard drives fill up with gigabytes of data written to the console.log file by the SkMACMate software. For a while, I kept Console open and cleared the log every other day or so. This sort of worked, but eventually the Mac's performance slow dramatically. I tried to configure an AppleScript to clear the log, with no success. Then one day, while just fiddling around, I launched Tiger Cache Cleaner (TCC) and told it to "Clean System Log Archives." I thought that if that if it cleared the console.log file, I could let TCC automatically do that every day. What ends up happening is that, if the Console app is open, TCC does away with the log and the entry for the console.log file just displays "Log Fil...

Prevent SkyMACMate from locking up on Intel Macs
If you purchase any Yealink product and use it with, say, Skype on your Mac, you must install a program called SkyMACMAte. At the time of this writing, this program is compiled for PowerPC only (version 1.0.0.12), and has been the cause of my Mac locking up reliably every couple of days. I have emailed Yealink several times about it, but only get Japanese replies. From lots of testing, searching, and reading, I have learned that some people believe the program locks up because of a problem with dual-core CPUs, while others think it is a bug in the code that if it runs for longer that 24 hours at a time, it dies. Either way, it kills my system. With the combination of some Automator and AppleScript scripts, and a little help from cron and iCal, we can minimize how often this thing locks up our machine. I say minimiz...

Configure some hidden SkyMACMate settings
When I upgraded to the latest version of SkyMACMate for my USB Skype adaptor, I found that it now had Skype as the default dialing mode, and there were still no preferences. It is rather lacking when compared to SkypeMate, which is the Windows version. But hidden inside the application is a config file named Custom.ini. You can find it by control-clicking on SkyMACMate and selecting Show Package Contents, and then navigating into Contents -> MacOS. Using a text editor, I was able to set it to line dialing as default. There are also other settings available, such as: bBoxDefaultPSTN = 0 for USB, 1 for Line bDialPopupSkype = 1 to make Skype come to front during a call iBoxOutputCIDType = Caller ID mode, not sure on values bRefusePSTNWhenSkypeTalking = 1 to set the line Busy when making a skype call, 0 if other phones are connected before the skype box There are oth...
