Review: Razer DeathAdder Gaming Mouse

There are many reasons to look for alternatives to Appleís Mighty Mouse, and one of the latest is the Razer DeathAdder Mac Edition. Razer is known for its mice, especially in the world of Windows gamers, but up to now, there were no Mac drivers for gamers. This does not render Razer mice entirely useless on the Mac, but makes them act like standard mice, stripping them of most special features ...

Disable Growl pop-up notifications via AppleScript

This happens to my friends and I all the time ... you're giving a presentation, watching a movie, or whatever, and the Growl notifier starts popping up with your gChat messages or messages from GMail. I finally wrote an AppleScript to easily toggle the two notifiers for such circumstances; I hope this is helpful for others! Here's the script: tell application "System Events" set isRunning_Growl to (count of (every process whose name is "GrowlHelperApp")) > 0 set isRunning_Google to (count of (every process whose name is "Google Notifier")) > 0 end tell if isRunning_Google then tell application "GrowlHelperApp" set the allNotificationsList to {"Growl Toggler"} reg...

Control iTunes with iPhone headset

This might be obvious, but I just discovered that if I plug my iPhone headphones (the Apple-supplied set) into my late-2008 MacBook Pro, I can control iTunes just as I control music playback on my iPhone -- the button on the cord lets me play, pause and skip a song. [robg adds: I imagine you can also jump back a song, too, using a triple-click as described in this hint. I'm not sure what other portable Macs this may work on.]

Create a Mac-friendly Firefox window resize bookmark

It has always bothered me that hitting the green "maximize" button in Firefox makes the window take up the entire screen, instead of just maximizing it vertically. However, by reading this how-to and combining it with this javascript from the Mozilla documentation, I found a work-around: Open the Bookmarks manager. Create a new bookmark on your bookmarks bar with the Name set to resize and the Location set to this string: javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(window.innerWidth+window.scrollMaxX,screen.availHeight); There you go -- you're done! The bookmark should be in your bookmarks bar, so you can just click on the book...

All this hardware takes up a lot of space in my suitcase, and with the increasing cost of l...
