Create a text clipping containing the '@' character

I needed to create a text clipping that contained the "@" character, but couldn't, because MacOS creates dragged text containing an "@" character as an email link. See for yourself: Select the following text -- xxxx+yyyy -- then drag it to your Desktop. This creates a text clipping file named xxxx+yyyy.textClipping. Now select the following text -- xxxx@yyyy -- and drag it to your Desktop, and notice that the file is named xxxx@yyyy.mailloc, and its icon says MAILTO. If you drag and drop this text into a program, it will get pasted as mailto:xxxx@yyyy.mailloc. The solution requires editing the xxxx+yyyy.textClipping clipping file. This requires several steps: Extract the contents of its resource fork into a temporary file (using a receipe from this hint) Edit the temporary file Write the temporary file back into the resource fork. ...

10.5: Edit compiled NIBs with Interface Builder

We know compiled NIBs don't open in Interface Builder (part of Xcode). As almost all Apple programs use compiled NIBs, it's a real pain to try to tweak their interface elements with Xcode. But some non-Apple programs use regular non-compiled NIBs, so the trick it to copy the compiled keyedobjects.nib file into a regular .nib resource, and then open it with Interface Builder. Just navigate to the Content » Resources folder of the program you want to edit then, find, select and drag and drop the keyedobjects.nib you need to edit to some other non-compiled .nib. The original compiled keyedobjects.nib will then open and allow every usual interface tweaking. Of course, I had some concerns about this trick. But I used it to edit the Keynote 3 resources, and so far, I've haven't seen any problems -- and Keynote is as stable as before. A nice way t...

Create Nokia N85 iSync plug-in

I really had to add contacts to my new great Nokia N85 phone, so I hacked a way to do it. It's actually very simple; just replace N96 with N85 everywhere within the N96 plug-in. Start by downloading the plug-in for the N96, and install it on your Mac. Open the folder /Library/PhonePlugins (Command-Shift-G in a Finder window, then type/paste the above path). Copy (you may drag it with the Option key pressed) the Nokia_N96_1v2.phoneplugin folder to the Desktop (or where you want; just out of PhonePlugins). Rename the new copy on the Desktop to Nokia_N85_1v2.phoneplugin. Open this folder, then open Contents » Resources within it. Open all files at every level, except the NokiaN96.tiff image file, with a plain text editor (drag them inside the application icon). I used an old BBedit Light, but you may use any editor (TextWrangler and Smultron are free; I'm not sure if you may use TextEd...
