Fix apparently-corrupted PDF attachments in Mail

Lately I'd been having trouble with PDF attachments in Mail -- but only on my MacBook Pro. Instead of seeing a preview of the PDF in the message, I'd see a small black square, maybe 10x10 pixels in size. If I tried to avoid the problem by saving the PDF, the resulting file couldn't be opened in either Preview or Reader; I'd get an error message saying the PDF was corrupt. However, the very same message on my Mac Pro (using IMAP on both Macs, with the message in the inbox) worked perfectly, so I knew it wasn't a problem with the message itself. After pulling my hair out for a while (no luck with Google searches, no Mail plug-ins on either machine, etc.), occasional macosxhints editor Kirk McElhearn suggested a solution that I hadn't even considered: rebuilding the mailbox on the MacBook Pro. Sure enough, after selecting Mailbox » Rebuild, all the troublesome PDF attachments were magically resolved -- previewing and saving both work as ex...

Create PDFs formatted for easy iPhone reading

I wanted to upload a copy of the book collection I keep in Delicious Library 1 to my iPhone. Since Delicious Library can't sync to the iPhone like it can to iPod (via the notes feature), I decided to print the collection to a PDF. I uploaded it with the AirSharing application, but I could just as well have emailed it to myself. I ended up with a multi-page PDF the required difficult scaling and dragging to read. To make things easier, I did the following: In Page Setup, I created a page 3.5 inches wide by 300 inches long. After printing my library to the PDF, I opened the PDF on my Mac in Preview. I chose File » Save as, and saved a copy. I left the Format pop-up menu set to PDF, and set the Quartz Filter pop-up to Reduce File Size. This gives a very readable single-column document that doesn't take up much space. I do wish I could get rid of more margin, but it's not a bad solution as is.

View PDF File (for Camino) 1.01

This script will download the file at the URL on the clipboard, open it in its default application, and then expeditiously move it to the trash. This is useful for viewing PDF files 'temporarily' — the PDF will open in Preview but the file will not be saved anywhere. To get the URL of a PDF on the clipboard, right-click on a link to the PDF and choose 'Copy Link Location' from the contextual menu. (The script will act on any URL copied to the clipboard, whether it points to a PDF or some other kind of file. If the URL is for an image, say if you choose 'Copy Image Location' from the contextual menu, the download will be opened in your default image viewing/editing application, before getting trashed.)

10.5: Annotate non-PDF (raster) images in Preview

As is known, one can annotate PDF documents by means of Mac OS X standard Preview application. It turns out that the same functionality is available for raster images also, but for some reason, it's hidden by developers. Open your picture in Preview, then select View » Customize Toolbar. Drag the Annotate tool to your toolbar. Then just choose the type of annotation you want to make from the newly-created toolbar element, and use the mouse to add it to your picture. You can also use following modifiers: Press the '+' or '-' keys to increase or decrease line thickness. Choose Tools » Show Colors and use the color wheel to change the color of the selected object (including notes). Choose Tools » Show Fonts and use the fonts panel to change the text note font. This functionality could be useful when commenting screenshots. [robg ...
