Send file a little faster with Bluetooth File Exchange
Simply drop the item you want to send via Bluetooth File Exchange (BFE) onto its icon in the Dock, then select the relevant device from the list that appears. No need to use the BFE menulet in the menu bar, thus saving that step. The menulet icon of BFE could be removed from the menu bar if you find the Dock method more convenient. Applies to Panther, Tiger, Leopard

View Doppler radar-in-motion on the desktop
This hint explains how to view an in-motion Doppler weather radar image from The Weather Channel on your desktop. A little precaution is in order, though: this will eat up quite a bit of CPU cycles (between 12% and 30% on an Intel Mac mini). I use it on a machine that does monitoring/notification, but I'd never use it on a machine I use for normal work. The "animation" is somewhat slow, but tolerable in my opinion. This hint requires use of the command line. Also, I make no guarantees that it won't break something, etc. I've only done this on Leopard, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work with Tiger (no Panther or earlier, because they don't have launchd). There are two components to this: A unix script to retrieve the images from The Weather Channel or NOAA or wherever else, and a launchd agent that periodically runs the script. Here's the shell script: ...

Convert Windows' PowerISO .daa file archives in OS X
I have trawled Google for hours looking for this problem. I was trying to unpackage a .daa disk image created in PowerISO on Windows. I didn't want to pay for the PowerISO application for Windows (and my file was over 300MB, which is the limit for the trial), so I was hoping to find a Mac alternative. Pages and pages of Googlism later, and I found the open source (GPL) DAA Converter.DAA Converter converts the archive to an ISO disk image format that you can mount in OS X. It's working great on Leopard, and I can't see a reason it shouldn't work on Panther or later, as stated on their page.

Clone Parental Control settings with Apple Remote Desktop
The key to cloning parental controls with ARD is niutil, the command line utility for netinfo. This works for Tiger (and probably Panther), but will not work in Leopard as Apple has finally banished netinfo from Leopard. Read on for the how-to... Here's how to do the cloning... Set the parental controls in the normal manner (System Preferences » Accounts » Parental Controls) on the donor machine. On the ARD admin machine, select the donor machine and send this Unix command /usr/bin/niutil -readprop . /users/student mcx_settings, where student is the account with the parental controls; execute as root and be sure to display all output. Select the plist in the ARD results window. Use Command-A to select all, then place the cursor in front of the first line of the plist, hold down shift, and click. Copy the plist. Create a new document in a text edito...

Hidden Gems In Leopard: OpenSnoop
I have a confession to make: I have not always been a Mac person. For the period of time between the retirement of System 9 and Panther (yes, it took Apple showing a real commitment to Unix for me to give them a shot again), I abandoned our fine operating system for greener pastures, well, [...]
