How to downgrade to an older version of MySQL
I run a number of web apps here in the house -- a copy of the macosxhints.com site, for instance, where I can experiment with changes before making them on the live site. I recently got rid of the machine I was using to host these sites, and migrated everything over to the Mac Pro. As part of that process, I had to install MySQL, which is basically a very simple operation. Just download the proper package from their downloads page, and run the installer. When I did this, though, I didn't notice that the default download is MySQL version 5; for compatibility reasons, I actually wanted MySQL 4.1. Unfortunately, I got all the way through the install before I noticed that I had installed version 5. So I removed the MySQL 5 files in /usr/local, downloaded the 4.1 version, and ran its installer. Unfortunately, the installer told me I couldn't install 4.1, as I already had a newer version of ...

Snow Leopard to add Cocoa Finder, ImageBoot?
Several major changes in Apple's next operating system have been revealed, sources claim. Mac OS X Snow Leopard is, according to AppleInsider, expected to completely jettison the Carbon-based version of Finder, in favor of a one written entirely in Cocoa. Apple has said that 64-bit support for Carbon will not be provided, and it may thus make sense to migrate as much code over as possible for ma...

One way to migrate an iTunes collection to another drive
I use iTunes for not only my extensive music and audio library, but my vast video library as well. The collection had become so large that I needed to copy all the files to a new, larger drive. My troubles began with iTunes unintuitive linking. Library consolidation scared me, in that it would mess up my hierarchal structure. If I reimported my videos, all my meticulous metadata would be lost. Naming the new drive the same as the old worked, but would break the link if anything within the link structure moved or changed due to the inode reference database. In other words, I must reimport from the new drive (and thus lose all my metadata). After days of experimenting, I came up with a solution that did the trick. With iTunes off, I copied all my music and video files to the new drive. I also copied my iTunes Library folder to the new drive as well (I prefer keeping all on one drive). I then unmounted my old drive and launched iTunes. Of course, iTunes could not loca...

iPhone to migrate to Intel x86 processors?
The Apple iPhone will be migrating from its current processor to something based on Intel's x86 architecture, information suggests. Multiple unnamed sources, including some who were correct about the switch of Macs to Intel technology, say that the iPhone will join Apple's computers within a year or two. More substantial evidence is said to have ...

10.5: A fix for Mail.app not showing IMAP sub-mailboxes
When setting up a new Leopard machine, I couldn't get any of my sub-mailboxes to show up under the mailboxes as they were on my other machines. The trick to fix this was to go into the Advanced tab of the settings for each IMAP mail account in Mail's preferences, and remove the IMAP path that's now defaulting to INBOX. When you remove this entry, Mail finds the rest of the mailboxes, and puts them back where they have always been, under the inbox for each account. While there are similar hints related mostly to Gmail, this particular issue doesn't seem to be covered by any existing hints. [robg adds: I've not seen this issue myself, but I migrated my Mail accounts from my prior system. If you can confirm (or contradict) please post in the comments.]

Fix an issue with the Firefox download folder location
If you migrate from a previous machine to a new machine using Apple's Migration Assistant, and in the process you create a new user -- this can happen if you create your old user account on the new machine prior to migrating -- you may have issues with Firefox and the Downloads folder. Because of a shortcoming in the migration tool, the OS X Downloads folder for the new account will have the path for the old account, and Firefox will then be unable to save because it does not have the correct permissions. I encountered this issue with 10.5 Leopard (both machines), migrating from an old Mac mini to new Mac pro.The solution is to open ~/Library » Preferences » com.apple.internetconfig.plist with the Property List Editor (Xcode required), navigate to the Download Folder item, and delete the value (not the key; just the value under it), then save the property list file. The next time you save a downloaded file in Firefox, OS X will ask you where you want it. An...

Sort files into date-labeled subfolders using Perl
When I installed Leopard, I installed it to an empty partition using a clean install. I then manually migrate my older documents and settings over time -- it's not that I don't trust the Migration Assistant (well, I don't trust it completely, but that's another story), but that I look on each major OS X upgrade as the chance to clean house. So this weekend, after a slow migration, I decided it was finally time to zero out the old 10.4 partition ... but I had a slight problem. I archive my iChats, and have done so for many years. In those archives, there's a ton of knowledge that I prefer to keep rather than lose, so I wanted to move the archived chats into my current iChats folder on the 10.5 disk. In 10.4, all iChat archives were stored at the top level of your user's Documents » iChats folder. In 10.5, however, archived chats are now sorted into subfolders based on the date of the chat. I wanted to move my huge archive to the 10.5 partition, but I didn't want to clutter ...
