Work around a PDF page-opening and zoom level issue

Sometimes, some PDF files do not start on page one, nor do they show up with the desired magnification. Moving to page one, setting the zoom, and resaving them does not fix the issues. When the new file is opened, the very same issues arise. Here's a fix, if you've got Acrobat Pro on your Mac: Open the PDF file and choose Document » Extract Pages to extract all pages individually. Select File » Create PDF » Merge Files into a Single PDF. Drag and drop the individual files, and then use File Size LARGER » Combine Files » Save. That's it! [robg adds: I haven't tested this one, nor have I seen this particular PDF issue on my Mac.]

Change the dock's maximum tile size

Even though there are 512x512 pixel icon representations for all Apple apps, the Dock stays at 128 pixels maximum when using the Sie slider in the Dock's System Preferences panel. This old hint explains how to set the magnification level to up to 512 pixels (using the largesize key; defaults write com.apple.dock largesize -int 512). Here's how to change the tile size (the maximum non-magnified dock icon size) to go along with the supersized zoomed icons. In Terminal, enter this command: defaults write com.apple.dock tilesize -int 256; killall Dock The tile size may be up to 256 pixels, so don't go any higher than that. Note that icons above 128 pixels are scaled, and you can notice some pixelation. [robg adds: The easy way to return things to normal is to just use the Dock's System Preferences panel -- change the sliders, and the ...

10.5: Magnify Dock items on the fly via the keyboard

I just noticed when I was trying to fool around with Spaces that by holding down Control and Shift, and then moving the mouse along the dock, the icons will magnify -- even if you have the Dock's magnification feature disabled. Pretty nice touch, if you ask me.[robg adds: This shortcut isn't documented in either the general help for the Dock's keyboard shortcuts, nor in the Keyboard Shortcuts tab of the Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences panel. The icons will magnify based on the setting in the Magnification slider in the Dock System Preferences panel. So to change the magnification setting, enable magnification, change the slider, then disable magnification (assuming you don't want it on all the time).]
