nova media updates iSync phone plug-ins to 6.2
nova media says it has released a new version of its iSync phone plug-ins, bringing their status to v6.2. The plug-ins let Mac owners sync phones not generally support by iSync, including models by Motorola, Samsung and BenQ. The patched plug-ins support 36 additional devices by Nokia and Sony Ericsson, bringing the total up to 190....

10.5: Eject drives and run iSync before sleep via script
This is a little AppleScript that I wrote to check and ask if the machine should unmount peripheral disks, and optionally perform an iSync, before sleeping. I was motivated to write this after about the fifteenth time I woke my laptop up after taking it home from work only to be greeted with a warning that I did not properly disconnect my Time Machine Disk. Additionally, since I use iSync to sync my date book and address book with my Nokia cell phone, I thought it would be a good idea to have it auto-sync before I put the machine to sleep. If you are capable with AppleScript, you can go in and make modifications for your system (e.g. turn off iSync, or the options to unmount). One caveat: if your home disk is not the same as the startup disk (unlikely on a laptop), the script will ask if you would like to unmount that disk before sleeping.I packed the script as an application bundle (with a 10.5-sized icon) for optional placement directly into the dock -- download ...

Sync larger To Do notes on Nokia N95
I really like my new Nokia N95, and with Nokia's driver for iSync, things have been working wonderfully. However, I found out that the notes associated to a ToDo task (notes = description in N95) were limited to 500 characters. Since I use some notes bigger than that, I proceeded as follows: Open /Library » PhonePlugins » Nokia-N95.phoneplugin » Contents » Resources » PhoneConduit.plist in your favorite text editor. (I suggest using a text editor rather than Property List Editor.) Change the maxLentgh parameter for the description attribute, in the com.apple.calendars.Task key from 500 to, say, 10000. Save the file and restart iSync. Next time you sync, your notes of up to 10000 characters will be there in you N95. I guess this hint can be extended to others mobile phones and PDAs, but then "caveat emptor."

iSync 5.1 plug-ins expand Nokia phone support
Nova media has released a new update for its iSync plug-ins, bringing their version to v5.1. The software adds support for approximately 130 phones to iSync, letting users copy over their iCal and Address Book information to a phone in advance of formal support from Apple. Brands covered by the plug-ins include Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson...

A fix for Nokia / iSync 'unexpected error'
I just got a new Nokia Navigator 6110 phone, downloaded the Nokia iSync plug-in from the Nokia (Europe) website, and tried by both USB and Bluetooth to sync my Address Book and iCal, without success. I had no problem at all with my SE K750i. I'm running 10.4.10 on an iMac G5.The synching would progress until almost the end of the 'applying changes,' then fail with an 'unexpected error.' Deleting and re-pairing the phone didn't make a difference. What did work was a tip by Julian Wright posted to Apple Discussions regarding another Nokia phone model -- simply click 'Reset Sync History' in iSync prefs. I then did a 'Delete and Sync,' and it worked successfully. Hope this saves someone else hours of frustration!

Briefly: Apple store opening; Apple TV PBX
In brief: Apple is preparing to open its latest retail store in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, April 14th with a preview of the new outlet. At least one Apple TV fan has managed to get the Asterisk PBX system running on an Apple TV, collecting the $500 reward offered by AppleTVHacks.net. Nokia has released an iSync plug-in page that offers suppor...

10.4: Use an official Nokia plug-in for iSync support
With versions of OS X 10.4 prior to 10.4.9, it was possible to use not-officially-supported phones with iSync. There are several hints here that show how to do this (it usually involves copying an existing iSync plugin for a supported phone and modifying it slightly to match the unsupported phone). I had happily been syncing my Nokia E60 in this way for many months. So I was very unpleasantly surprised to notice that after the OS X 10.4.9 upgrade I could no longer sync my unsupported phone. After spending hours trying to make this work, I crossed the pain threshold and bought a set of plugins from novamedia.de, but they did not work. Finally, after hours of searching, it turns out that Nokia now provides iSync plug-ins for a whole slew of phones, including models that Apple doesn't list as supported. From the Nokia site, you can n...

Use the Nokia PC Suite via Virtual PC or Parallels Desktop
I recently found this blog entry, which explains how to use the Nokia PC suite on a Mac (via VirtualPC or Parallels):I know there are Mac users out there like me who are complaining that Nokia does not have a Nokia PC Suite for Macs (or Nokia ?Mac? Suite). I don?t want to get into a Mac versus PC argument, but it should be made available even if we are only a small percentage of the market. So far, we resort to the iSync plugin to synchronize just the contacts and the calendar. The Nokia PC Suite offers a lot more. Fortunately, nothing is impossible. There is a way to use the Nokia PC Suite on the Mac.You'll need to download the usbfix.sh script from the above link to your home folder, make it executable (chmod 755 usbfix.sh), and then do this in the OS X Terminal:sudo sh usbfix.shThis temporarily unloads some conflicting USB kernel exte...

I modified a Nokia E61 plug-in to make it work with the new N95 (download 55KB), thanks to some hints from a German web site.
