10.5: Edit multiple events at once in iCal
In 10.5, the iCal user interface is quite limiting. For instance, you can edit only a single event at a time. But there is something of a workaround to that problem: open multiple iCal windows at a time. Here's how. Quit iCal, then paste the following line into Terminal:defaults write com.apple.iCal IncludeDebugMenu 1Now launch iCal and select Debug » New Calendar Window, or just press Command-L. You can now edit an event in one window, and another event in the other window. iCal keeps the windows in sync, so that a change in one appears in the other.[robg adds: The iCal debug menu was covered in this hint, but I thought this workaround for editing multiple events was worth sharing.]

Remove duplicate birthday events in iCal
I've had several instances of birthdays in the iCal birthday calendar showing up twice. It finally bugged me enough to look at. I had Syncrospector up and was about to perform surgery, when I tried something simpler that didn't require a scalpel. Uncheck Show Birthdays calendar in iCal's preferences, then recheck it. That cleaned it out for me. [robg adds: You can read more about Syncrospector in this hint, or in this tutorial on Apple's site.]

Put Your Screen Saver to Work With iCalScreenSaver
That mosaic screen saver of your iPhoto pictures may look groovy, but it’s really not doing anything to help your work flow. How about a screen saver that displays all your iCal appointments instead? 10.5: Sync Gmail Calendars with iCal
Google has opened up their calendar system so that you can have real two-way sync of your online Gmail calendars with iCal. You can set up multiple calendars with what appears to be full iCal functionality, and have them "push" changes to Google. You can read their detailed instructions for help getting things going. (You'll then need to click the Enable Google Calendar in Apple's iCal link on that page.)With these new abilities, the workarounds mentioned in this hint and comments are no longer necessary.

Replace MobileMe with an open source server
Instead of using Apple's MobileMe account and losing control over your data, you can instead use dotmac for data synchronization and iDisk-like storage space. It requires a machine running either Linux or OS X with Apache and some Perl modules installed. It works fine here with OS X 10.5.5. [robg adds: I hadn't heard of this project before, and it looks intriguing, claiming to support data sync for any app that uses .Mac (iCal, Address Book, etc.), iDisk-like remote storage, and support for Backup. Note that the setup process requires a fair bit of work in Terminal. Also, if you want the true benefits of .Mac (offsite hosted storage available anywhere), you'll need to set up your replacement server in the same manner. I haven't tested this one.]
