Mac's web share sees rare drop in November
Mac web usage saw an uncharacteristic drop in November that may be owed partly to Windows 7, new data from NetApplications shows. Windows 7's first full month of availability saw its share nearly double to 3.98 percent of Internet traffic and contributed to a rare fall in the Mac's share, which fell 0.16 percent across all versions. The data also reveals that many users had skipped Vista entirely, as Windows XP lost 1.45 percent of absolute share in the Windows 7 switchover while Vista only lost 0.23 percent....

Google today at last provided full details for Android 2.0, its first major update to its mobile OS. The platform brings a much improved approach to mail that allows both for multiple accounts and native Microsoft Exchange support. The web browser has similarly been upgraded and is only the second HTML5-capable mobile browser outside of Safari; it further brings some of the earliest multi-touch support and recognizes double-tap zooms....

Use 'shake to shuffle' mode from mini-player
While playing around with my iPhone last night, I found that the 'shake to shuffle' feature will work from the mini-player that pops up on your screen after a double-tap of the home button. To enable the mini player (i.e. the iPod controls), go to Settings » General » Home Button, and select iPod controls. The only issue I have had was that when I really shake the iPhone, it goes to landscape mode and freaks out.

Easier correction for iPhone typos in iPhone OS 3.0
Since the release of 3.0, cut-copy-paste has been an amazing feature. I have used and abused it from SMS to Safari and beyond. I will claim I can type up a storm (no pun intended) on my iPhone and will generally leave characters behind, or find words that the auto-correct thinks are different than I do. To prevent confusion, I always double-check and correct my typos. With the iPhone, you have always been able to press and hold and obtain the magnifying class to get precisely where you want in the text. In 3.0, I have noticed a little lag when doing so (and it may be my 3G; who knows) and trying to edit my text. As such, the easier correction method here is to double-tap the incorrectly spelled word and then start back over clean. This hint can also be used for mass delete or mass replacement of text.

Stream iTunes app podcasts in the background on iPhone
I just discovered this today, though I'm not sure if it's a feature of iPhone OS 3.0 or if it's been there all along. As you know, you can stream a podcast episode rather than downloading it by double-tapping the episode within the iTunes app on the iPhone. The familiar QuickTime logo will appear and you can listen to the podcast instead of downloading it.However, a nifty feature is that when you start streaming the episode, you can close iTunes and it will still play. I've been able to open other apps whilst the iTunes app is playing a podcast episode.

About duplicate contacts and calendars on iPhone 3.0
When I synced my iPhone after the iPhone 3.0 OS upgrade, I wound up with double contacts and calendar entries. Checking every Mac in the house, as well as MobileMe, though, revealed no duplicate entries. They were only on the iPhone. As I dug into the problem on the iPhone, I discovered that these weren't actually true duplicates (i.e. the same event is entered twice on the same calendar), but rather I had two distinct groups of calendars and contacts. In both apps, when I tapped the Groups button, I saw that there were two groups in each app: On my iPhone and MobileMe Account (or something like that, indicating my MobileMe account). I then started digging around in both the MobileMe and iTunes sync settings. As it turned out, I had the phone set to sync via both iTunes and MobileMe. I've had it set like this forever, but it seems iPhone 3.0 allows you to have both sync types active at once. When you do, you get a group for each.Once I figured out what was going on, I...
