10.5: Install tips for PHP's pecl_http on 64-bit Intel Macs
Here are some tips for getting the PHP pecl_http extension running on a Macintosh OS X 10.5.x Leopard 64-bit Intel machine. For starters, you need to follow the instructions in the PHP Documentation pages to install the PEAR/PECL manager, because it is no longer in the standard OS X setup: To compile the extension, you have to install the Developers (Xcode) from your system disks because they are not installed by default. This is a simple step. It's not made clear that you need to install an older version of pecl_http than the latest stable version (1.6.1 as of this writing), because 1.6.1 needs PHP6. I used version 1.5.6 successfully. So, your Terminal command has to be sudo pecl install pecl_http-1.5.6. There is apparently a libcurl dependency in the case of pecl_http (although no dependencies are listed at the extension site), but it came with the excellent ...

Apple exec Bob Borchers and various game developers recently discussed the future of games on the iPhone. "Patrick Gunn, director of marketing for EA Mobile, showcased Need for Speed Undercover, which will be available next month. Gunn says that EA has 'taken full advantage of all of the unique elements... like touch, flick, accelerometer, and motion sensitivity' — and graphically, the game appears to be roughly on par with a PSP title."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Why Developers Are Switching To Macs
snydeq writes "Programmers are finding themselves increasingly drawn to the Mac as a development platform, in large part due to Apple's decision to move to Intel chips and to embrace virtualization of other OSes, which has turned Mac OS X into a flexible tool for development, InfoWorld reports. The explosion of interest in smartphone development is helping the trend, with iPhone development lock-in to the Mac environment the chief motivating factor for Apple as a platform of choice for mobile development. Yet for many, the Mac remains sluggish and poorly tuned for development, with developers citing its virtual memory system's poor performance in paging data in and out of memory and likening use of the default-network file system, AFS, to engaging oneself with 'some kind of passive-aggressive torture.' What remains unclear is whether Apple will lend an ear to this new wave of Mac-based development or continue to develop products that lock out uses programmers expect."Read more of this story at Slashdot.
