Empty iPhone Mail app's trash to regain file space

I have six mail accounts that I check on with my iPhone, and for months, I've moved read e-mails to the Trash. What I forgot was that the trash needs to be cleared periodically. I regained a couple of hundred megabytes of space by cleaning all the accounts. To empty the Trash you must enter each account, then enter the Trash and tap Edit. You are then given the option to Delete All. Select Delete All, then confirm the Delete All. A simple tip, but one that may free up a fair bit of space on your iPhone.

One solution for IMAP message upload issues in Mail

I've been using Mail for a long while with POP accounts. Recently I decided to stop using POP and switch all my accounts to IMAP. I simply disabled my POP accounts (not deleted at all yet) and set up the IMAP ones. Everything worked perfectly until I decided to move important messages from my Mac to the IMAP accounts (you do ithis in the same way as if you where moving messages between different mailboxes). The problem was that moving messages wasn't reliable -- sometimes messages got uploaded, while other times they became grayed out, but nothing happened. After trying several things, including moving them one-by-one (which didn't work either), I found that rebuilding my local mailboxes seems to fix the problem -- as I write this, Mail has uploaded (moved) 350 of 870 messages without any problems. As rebuilding is a per-mailbox thing, I've had to rebuild each local mailbox. I'm guessing that this problem comes from the fact that I've been moving my mailboxes around be...

Change the iPhone/iPod touch's Notes font

First, go to Settings » General » Keyboard » International Keyboards, click into the Japanese keyboard, and enable the QWERTY keyboard.Next, open Notes, and start typing a note. Click the globe icon next to the Space Bar to switch to Japanese, and type a character. When you do, the Notes font will change from Marker Felt to Helvetica. Here's a demonstration video.[robg adds: This works, and the note will remain in Helvetica even after closing and reopening Notes. You can even delete the Japanese character you typed -- once the font has changed, it won't change back.]

Remove Fusion 2 Windows apps from Open With menu

One of the new features in Fusion 2 is the ability to have your Windows' applications appear in OS X's Open With contextual menu. This feature is disabled by default, but there's a slight issue if you turn it on (say for testing during a review :) ), and then disable it again: the programs will still be listed in the Open With menu in OS X, even after a restart. I've heard that this will be addressed in the first minor update to Fusion 2, but if you'd like to fix it in the interim, here's the solution. Shut down your Windows VM (not sure this is actually required, but it's probably best), and switch to the Finder. In the Finder, Control-click on your Windows VM (which is probably stored in your user's Documents » Virtual Machines folder, unless you moved it) and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. In the new window that opens, navigate into the Applications folder, and delete all the entries you find there. As I under...

Clear all favicons from Firefox 3

If you want to clear all favicons from your bookmarks in Firefox 3, edit the places.sqlite database, which can be found in your profile folder, located in your user's Library » Application Support » Firefox » Profiles » random_text.default folder. You then need to use any SQLite editor to execute these two commands on that file:delete all from moz_faviconsupdate moz_places set favicon_id = NULLQuit the editor and restart Firefox, and the favicons will be gone (this works on every platform). Also, if you want to permanently disable favicons, type about:config in the URL bar, and edit these two properties:browser.chrome.favicons -- set to falsebrowser.chrome.site_icons -- set to false[robg adds: You can use the built-in sqlite3 program in Terminal to edit this file. Just cd into the profile folder, then (with Firefox not running) type sqlite3 places.sqlit ...
