Do you know what the first Apple looked like?

Daniel Turner has posted a nice photo of the Apple I, designed by company co-founder Steve “Woz” Wozniak, at MIT’s Technology Review. If you’re not familiar with the computer landscape of 1976, you might be shocked to see that it’s actually just a circuit board. Buyers of the “affordable” $666.66 product (about $2,400 in today’s [...]

Convert Flash video to other formats via an online tool

Many YouTube to iPod/Quicktime format converters exist, but most either cost money or are impractical. As an alternative, vixy.net is a free, online, fast video conversion tool. Export YouTube videos to a variety of formats, including iPod, QuickTime, and AVI. A frame of a logo is placed at the end of the movie, but other than that, there is no video alteration.[robg adds: I tried this with a 2:48 video from YouTube, and it worked -- just don't try to use the Save button on the site. I first tried to click Save, and got a "400" error. Then I noticed that my browser (Camino, but Safari does the same) had auto-downloaded the file. The conversion isn't the quickest, particularly because the site can't tell your browser to maximize CPU usage, so things happen based on the browser's priority. On my Mac Pro, it took about six minutes to convert that 2:48 clip. The end result, though, seems to be of very good quality (obviously tied to the qual...

QuickTime .MOV + Toshiba + Vista = BSOD

Question Guy writes "Apple QuickTime is involved in a troubling problem that doesn't seem to be addressed by any of the major software and hardware manufacturers involved. On Toshiba machines, such as the Protege Tablet M400s, with Windows Vista installed, opening a locally stored QuickTime .MOV causes instant bluescreen. All other video functions seem to be working in other video playback types — even streaming .MOVs work — and there is little to no 'buzz' on the Net that might push any of the parties to investigate or to play nice together (Microsoft for Vista, Intel for the GMA945 chipset, Toshiba for their custom tablet software, Apple for QuickTime). Help, anyone?"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Epson Stylus Photo R2400 and glossy paper options bug

New owners of Epson's Stylus Photo R2400 may not be aware that there are two types of black ink available for this printer: Matte and Photo. If you have the Matte ink cartridge installed, you will not have access to the Glossy paper choices (because Matte ink on glossy paper would not produce a quality print). However, there is more madness to this method than you might expect. There's also a bug in the Epson driver software (for Tiger, at least) that prevents the printer from communicating the change in the cartridge back to the driver so, even though you have the correct ink installed, the Glossy paper options are still unavailable to choose. The solution is to launch the Epson Printer Utility, click the Ink Levels button to show the eight cartridges and their respective ink levels, and then click on the black ink cartridge, so that it displays its information in the window. You'll note that it will show the correct information for that cartridge. When you quit the P...
