10.5: Run Spore in OS X 10.5.2

While Spore (the full game, not Creature Creator) states that it require OS X 10.5.3, it's possible to get it running on OS X 10.5.2. I thought that I'd try to get it to run under 10.5.2 first in case it was possible, so I wouldn't need to upgrade. Unfortunately, 10.5.3 and later breaks compatibility with Starcraft, Diablo and some other older games on Nvidia 8x00 graphics. Here's how I got it running in 10.5.2: Insert the CD, then using Terminal or something that can see invisible files, copy the whole contents of the CD to your hard disk, to somewhere like /Spore/. Navigate to /Spore » SPORE(TM) Install.app » (Control-clcik and Show Package Contents) » Contents » Resources. Open tgInstall.plist in your favorite pure text editor. Comment out the $INSTALLVOLUME line, as shown below: ...

One possible fix for internet connections that drop out

If you search the Apple Discussion boards you will see a lot of discussions like this one -- they're all about Airport and Ethernet internet connections dropping. I think I have figured out a solution to the problem (I use 10.5.3), as I was having it as well. With certain routers, OS X will choose to use the address of the router as the DNS server's IP address. Therefore, it will first try and contact the router to get DNS info, and only after a while will it find it's way to the net. I had a new MacBook Pro with this issue, as well as a new iMac. The latter fortunately showed the wrong DNS server IP (grey fonts), but the Macbook didn't. The solution is to go in the Network System Preferences panel and select 'Manually' instead of 'Using DCHP'. Then fill in the IP address, subnet mask, router address, and DNS server address. Click 'Advanced' and then go to the 'DNS' tab to verify ...

Customize the inserted date/time in Pages '08

In Pages, I couldn't get both the date and the time inserted in the combination of formats that I wanted. (You can see the available formats by double-clicking on an inserted date/time field.) Here's how I added a customized format. I?m working with Pages 3.0.2 and Mac 10.5.3 on an iMac G5. One has to be comfortable editing a plist file.Quit Pages. Select Pages in the Finder, Control-click on it, and pick Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Then, after backing it up somewhere just in case, open the following file:/Contents/Frameworks/SFWordProcessing.framework/Versions/A/Resources/English.lproj/Defaults.plistYou can do this using TextEdit or the Property List Editor (if you have that installed). In TextEdit, look for the following lines: <string>Custom</string> <integer>0&...
