How to use a new iPod with an old Mac

The newest generation of iPods requires iTunes 8 or higher. iTunes 8 requires Windows XP service pack 2 or higher, or MacOSX 10.4.9 or higher. So what do you do if you have an older Mac which can not run, or otherwise is not running OS X 10.4.9 or later? Or perhaps you just don't want to upgrade your entire OS just to use a new iPod. Here is one possible solution...Since Apple writes software that supports very old Windows operating systems from six or more years ago, but does not support its own Mac OS systems from just three or so years ago, the answer is to run Virtual PC on your older Mac, and run Windows XP service pack 2 or higher on it. There, thanks to Windows, you can install iTunes 8 with no problems. You'll have to transfer your library over to the windows side, and you'll have to launch Virtual PC every time you want to update your iPod -- but at least you can use a new generation iPod on an older Mac.Sad, but it works.

10.5: Enable SSH with Kerberos

I have a number of Macs and Red Hat servers running with sshd and kerberos (using an MIT KDC running on Red Hat). I can log onto any of these servers just fine with Tiger, but with Leopard, I cannot. I've set up kerberos on the Leopard client, and I can acquire a ticket. However, when I try to log on to a server, it appears that the client isn't even trying to send the kerberos ticket. I will not take credit for the following solutions; they come from Apple Support. However, I've tested them both, and they worked for me. 10.5 disables gssapi authentication by default. You have to edit /etc/ssh_config, uncomment the line containing GSSAPIAuthentication and change no to yes. Engineering claims this change was made in 10.4.9 and later, but 10.4.10 and 10.4.11 allow gssapi authentication by default for me. You can also run ss...

Ten Days With Leopard: Coolest Cat Ever

Apple is known for the stability of its operating systems and its nearly seamless ability to deliver upgrades and enhancements that only rarely break existing applications. Still, before I upgraded from Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.9 to Leopard, I made a complete bootable backup copy of my MacBook's hard drive.

10.4: A fix for non-mounting USB drives in 10.4.10

After updating my Mac to OS X 10.4.10, my external FireWire/USB2 drive didn't mount any more (if plugged in via the USB2 port). I thought about an interface failure specific to my enclosure, but searching on the web, I saw that it was a common problem for 10.4.10 users with Intel Macs and external enclosures. Moreover, I tested the drive on another Mac with 10.4.9 and it worked flawlessly. So it was a problem with the 10.4.10 update. The only solution found until now was downgrading to 10.4.9 again, but this is a real pain. I was ready to use Pacifist to replace the new USB kernel extensions with the older 10.4.9 ones. But before doing this, I wanted to check if I could force the drive to mount in some way, and accidentally found the workaround.I used System Profiler to list USB devices and get the VendorID/ProductID of the drive;...
