Apple's full financial disclosure exudes confidence

Though surprising, Apple Computer's decision Wednesday to disclose full financial results of its fiscal fourth quarter, despite ongoing options issues, should be seen as an indicator of the company's overall confidence surrounding the matter, one Wal...

Make zero the Reject key again in Aperture 1.5

Aperture 1.1 used the zero key to reject images. This was very convenient because it was next to the right arrow key. Aperture 1.5 changes the Reject key to 9 -- not convenient at all -- and makes 0 the Unrated key. This hint swaps 0 and 9 on the keypad so that zero is once again the Reject key.Quit ApertureOpen the application package (control-click and Show Package Contents)Find the KeycodeMapping.strings files. There is one in each of the language folders in the Resources folder. The easiest way to find these is to type keycode into the Finder's search box.Open the KeycodeMapping.strings file that corresponds to the language you are using with a text editor such as TextEdit or TextWrangler. On the second line, swap the location of the numbers 25 and 29. The file will now look like this:   Old: "82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 91, 92";   New: "25, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 22, ...

Scroll back and forward through visited Firefox pages

I just discovered that holding Control and Option, and then moving the scroll wheel on my mouse moves me forward or back through the pages I've visited in Firefox.[robg adds: It took me a bit to figure this one out, as I thought it was referring to Firefox's history. It's not. Instead, it works to scroll through the pages you've loaded within one tab of Firefox. So if you go from hints to apple.com to cnn.com, you can then use Control-Option-scroll to cycle between all three of those sites. The other reason I had trouble testing is that I was originally in Firefox 2 beta -- I switched a month or so ago, and had forgotten about it. Control-option scrolling in the beta just resizes text on the current page. A bit of brief experimentation, though, shows that Command-Option and scroll does the forward/back trick in the beta.]

Remove emails from POP server through Mail

I prefer to not have Mail erase messages from the server after it retrieves them, in case I need to access certain emails from remote sites. I used to go to my email provider's webmail to erase the messages I didn't need to keep, but by accident I found how to do this through Mail. Here is how to get into the Account Info window, which allows you to remove messages from POP (that's all I've tested) servers without removing them from your computer. In Mail's sidebar, click on either Inbox or a specific mailbox nested under Inbox from which you would like to remove messages. Either control-click and choose Get Info from the pop-up menu, or hit Command-I and the Account Info window will come up. In the Messages on Server tab, you can select individual or multiple messages in the standard way (shift-click to highlight a group, command-click to add or remove individual messages). The 'Remove from Server' button is in the lower right.I hope this hint can help...

Browse iTunes music collection by typing

While browsing your iTunes library, you can start typing the name of an album, and iTunes will scroll along to the album in question. It seems to have a buffer, as typing The best of Paul Brady jumped past the other The Best of... albums I had to the reach the Paul Brady collection. This is presuming that you have the music sorted by album. If it is sorted by artist, typing the artist's name will scroll to the first album by that artist. You don't need to click in the search bar to quickly get to where you want. You can navigate iTunes entirely by keyboard which was news to me.[robg adds: This works in any of the three iTunes view modes; just make sure that you have the listing panel active, or else your typing will choose items in the Source column instead. It's also not restricted to album and artist; whatever column you have elected to sort on will receive the characters you type -- song, genre, whatever...]

Configure Griffin AirClick to work with any program

There's an older hint here on using the Griffin AirClick in other programs. That hint is a bit old, and Griffin has changed the insides of the AirClick program a fair amount since then, so here's an updated and expanded hint...Griffin AirClick USB is a pretty fantastic fully programmable USB remote. Each button essentially launches an AppleScript of your choosing. The beauty of the AirClick program is that it's actually really easy to add just about any application you want, with any functionality you can achieve via AppleScript. It comes with a bunch of built-in programs supported, such as iTunes, VLC, QuickTime, iMovie, PowerPoint, etc, so you don't have to worry about those. But what about unusual programs like Artstor OIV, which has a very unusual slide-ad...

Just unplug the headphones instead, and the iPod will pause.Caution: Pulling on the wire might damage the plug...
